What a waste
50% of the animal hides generated in slaughterhouses worldwide end up in landfills. Did you know why? Demand for leather is falling, driven by the growing popularity of synthetic alternatives - often labelled as ‘vegan’. But here’s the catch: even the so-called ‘next generation’ materials, such as apple or cactus ‘leather’, rely heavily on fossil fuel-based components.
Why are these materials so popular? Oil is cheap, and so are the products made from it. The only truly sustainable alternatives we could find were Mirum from Natural Fiber Welding and Reishi from Mycoworks, which are both free of petroleum-based components. But: they still require resource that have to be cultivated and harvested. Leather, on the other hand, is made from a material that would otherwise end up in a landfill or be incinerated. So turning hides into leather reduces waste - and hence, makes sense.
Of course it is important that the production of leather is done responsibly - and you know what: this applies to all the goods we use, always. We at MARAI are committed to making leather out of hides in our region that would normally be discarded, thus increasing their value. The leather we produce for our bags and accessories is also made available to other brands that share our values.
Our goal? To raise awareness, share knowledge beyond greenwashing, empower consumers, shed a light on the real impact of food production and encourage mindful purchasing decisions.
