Our Values
We create timeless, refined, elegant bags and accessories from sustainable leather and sheepskins. We select all our materials and partners with respect for people, animals, and nature. As part of this process, we adhere to several basic principles that are close to our hearts.
Natural Instead of Synthetic Materials
Leather and sheepskins are beautiful natural materials, but their production is widely criticised – often for good reason. Non-transparent global supply chains, the use of harmful chemicals in tanning, and poor working conditions are just some of the reasons why. Yet animal hides are a major by-product of the local meat and dairy industry. As long as the consumption of animal products continues, it makes perfect sense to use the hides of these animals – rather than burning them.
Quality and Craftsmanship
We produce leather and sheepskins in a way that makes sense to us: with natural tanning agents from renewable resources and with responsible partners that are selected with care. We consider ecological, ethical, and fair production conditions to be a must.
With MARAI we want to rediscover time-tested traditions and celebrate the value of the local. We support regional craftsmanship and the preservation of local knowledge. For this reason, we exclu-sively partner with workshops in Switzerland. Germany and Austria.
Local Production
We believe that in the future we will have to produce at a more local level if we want to tackle climate change and environmental pollution.
All our materials, production sites, and manufactories are within a radius of 150 kilometres. This allows us to stay in close contact with our partners and to see the various production processes at any time. In this way, we support the growth of the local economy and limit our ecological footprint.
Transparent Communication
We are concerned about the way the fashion industry attempts to cover up its destructive production processes through beautiful campaigns. That’s why we at MARAI strive for transparency in everything we do. On our website, we share how our products are made, from the first step to the finished piece, and also give our partners a chance to have their say.
