New organic leather - new products

In recent months, we haven’t only been designing new products, but have also focused deeply on the unique materials that define them: our leather. The idea for MARAI was born after we learned that Switzerland burns tens of thousands of goat and sheepskins from the food industry every year. This has been taking place ever since the regional leather industry came to an end in the 1950s.

We set out to change this, starting to process these hides regionally with purely plant-based tanning methods, restoring their value and preserving their origin.

The situation is slightly different for cattle hides, most of which are processed into leather in neighbouring countries. However, with the growing demand for regional organic leather here, I started independently collecting hides from organically farmed cattle a few years ago to produce regional leather for third party use. Now I'm delighted to introduce the first two products for MARAI made from this unique regional cowhide.

One such product is the Minimal Tote Bag - a refined, even more minimalist version of our Simple Tote. Crafted from soft, premium cowhide leather, it's simple yet sophisticated, with no superfluous details - no interior pocket, no lining, just pure functionality. Lightweight and versatile, it's perfect for everyday use. Available in black and natural leather.

Together with Karin from edition e, we've created a collection of timeless organizers featuring notebooks and calendars. Available in A6 andA5, each cover is crafted from natural or black organic cowhide, designed to accompany you throughout the year. The leather develops a beautiful patina over time, growing more personal with each use.
