How I Care for My Leather – A Simple Ritual of Attention
There are things we carry with us throughout our lives. Not just because they are practical or beautiful, but because they have become companions. Pieces that tell stories – of everyday life and special occasions, of detours and favourite moments.
For me, leather is one of them.
A living material that doesn’t get worse with time, but more beautiful – if we give it the attention it deserves.
Caring for these pieces is not a duty for me, but a quiet ritual. A moment of mindfulness that reminds me: what matters to me deserves care.
It’s this slow process – rubbing in beeswax, the scent of leather, the gentle shine afterwards – that always reconnects me: with the material, the craftsmanship, and the story behind each piece.
And because we are so often asked – "How do you properly care for leather?" -we’d like to take you along here. Through a few simple but effective steps that will help you care for your natural leather mindfully and preserve its beauty for years to come.
Mindful Leather Care: with beeswax and devotion, I give my leather a new radiance
1. Leather care: Less is more
I’m often asked how I care for our leather products. The answer is simple: gentle is enough. Leather is durable, but it’s a living material – it doesn’t need much, only the right things.
2. My way: Beeswax instead of chemicals
I use a leather balm based on beeswax. It makes the leather more supple and gently protects it from moisture and dirt. A natural film forms on the surface – without sealing it or altering it artificially.
( Tip: You can find such a balm, for example, here. )
I apply it sparingly with a soft cloth or sponge and let it absorb. Afterwards, you can gently polish the leather with a cotton cloth. The shine is subtle – but beautiful.
3. Welcoming patina
The first raindrops can hurt a little. But over time, their traces fade – or rather, they become part of the whole. Patina forms through the life we share with our pieces. Scratches, sunlight, weather – all leave their mark. And that is exactly what makes natural leather so unique.
So my advice: Be brave. Real leather is alive and allowed to show it. In our article "Nature breathes like our skin" you can read more about the poetic beauty of real materials – and why patina is a sign of quality.
4. Regularity instead of perfection
I care for my bags, coasters or cases about once or twice a year, depending on how much I use them. In spring, when the sun starts shining more often. Or simply whenever I feel: now is a good moment.
Sometimes I brush the leather lightly beforehand – no pressure, just a gentle brushing to remove sand or pollen. Only then comes the leather care – and that moment when I pause and feel: I’m taking care.
Each bag carries its own story – the patina makes each piece unique, and leather care supports that.
Leather care is not a must. It’s an offering. A mindful act of caring for the things that are allowed to stay with us for a long time. And perhaps, in a small way, for ourselves too.
We haven’t developed our own leather balm – not yet, anyway. But for our sheepskin products, you’ll already find a wool brush in the shop – for small care moments in between.
If you have any questions about leather care, or if you’ve had good experiences yourself – feel free to write to us. We’re always happy to exchange thoughts, tips and rituals. Because the things that stay with us for a long time deserve to be cared for – and shared.
