Sheepskins in our fur warehouse
The majority of Swiss sheepskins are disposed of nowadays. Instead, skins from merino sheep are imported from New Zealand and Australia. In these regions the sheep are outside all year round, as it is sunnier and warmer. This gives the sheepskins a different texture.
In Switzerland, a different climate leads to the fact that the wool of sheep is softer and more likely to felt. Although the wool of Swiss sheep in general is a material that is hardly in demand, Swiss sheepskins are wonderful products of excellent quality.
It is only in the last few years that the demand for Swiss sheepskins has increased again. G. Neuenschwander Söhne AG (GNS) in Emmental sources the skins from regional butchers in Bern, Valais and Grisons. The trade of raw hides forms the original core business of GNS, but has sharply fallen in the last decades. In the inhouse tannery, the raw skins are first being preserved before they are then processed into wonderful natural products.
