Field Notes: An August Full of Simplicity
This summer is not an easy one. For weeks, the heat has hung heavy over the farm. The earth has grown dry and hard, and not every harvest turned out the way we had hoped. That is how it goes when you live by what grows. Some years give more, others ask more of us. And yet, every summer leaves something behind. It shows you, quite honestly, what truly sustains us—and what only seemed important.
That exact thought has stayed with me since the spring. I kept asking myself: If simplicity had a form—what would it be?
In July, the first reply arrived. Our Simplicity sling bag was never just another bag. It was an attempt to make a feeling tangible. A shape for quietness. For clarity. For what truly matters.
And yet, it was never the end of the thought.
A summer like this makes many things simpler. Not easier – but clearer. In the long days, we naturally reach for the things that work. The ones allowed to stay because they truly walk beside us through the everyday. We realize we don't actually need very much. Just the right things.
And that is how the backpack and the shopper came to be. Not because we wanted to grow a collection, but because the same idea kept unfolding. The same mindset. The same quiet search for things that walk beside you instead of demanding to be noticed.
Over the past few weeks, I've noticed how important small rituals have become.
Before the day begins, I often sit for a moment in the morning on our double brown sheepskin—by now, my absolute favourite spot. Even before the to-do list kicks in or the world outside starts waiting. Just a few quiet minutes with a cup of coffee before the day takes hold. It is nothing extraordinary. And precisely because of that, it means so much to me. These few minutes remind me that peace does not wait until everything is done. You have to allow yourself to find it in between.
Perhaps that is my definition of simplicity now, too.
Not owning less. Not living slower. But choosing more consciously what is allowed to stay.
In late August, we will carry this thought further. Alongside the sling bag, two new shapes will arrive – the backpack and the shopper. Different in their purpose, yet born of the very same conviction.
Until then, I want to keep something simple: pausing more often. Looking closely. Not just letting summer drift by, but truly feeling it.
Because some things do not need to be searched for. You just have to notice them.
xoxo,
Nina
