Editorial Letter: April Issue: Bloom Anyway
There are months that start off quietly. And then there are months like this one. Over the past few weeks, we’ve looked inward a lot. We’ve asked questions, taken things apart, rearranged them, doubted, understood, and discarded them again. It was necessary. It was honest. And maybe a little difficult, too. Not just for us, but everywhere. Right now, the world doesn’t feel like a new beginning. More like a pause. Like being overwhelmed. Like a sense of world-weariness that can no longer be so easily brushed aside.
And that’s exactly where we’ll start in April. Not with another question, but with a decision.
Bloom anyway.
Not because everything is perfect. Not because it’s easy. But because we do it anyway. When we founded MARAI, we were always guided by the belief that materials deserve a second chance. That something that already exists doesn’t have to be lost. That even in one of the oldest materials—like leather—there lies the potential to rethink, act differently, and design more mindfully. Vegetably tanned, consciously chosen, saved, and transformed. Perhaps that, too, is a form of Bloom anyway.
A path forward that doesn't always have to be loud. But it must be consistent.
April isn’t about tuning out the world. It’s about not letting it paralyze us. Like flowers pushing through asphalt. Like something delicate that can’t be stopped. Like ideas that endure, even when everything seems against them. Like all of us, when we decide to keep going.
For us, this “nevertheless” is also reflected in the things we create.
This month, leather takes center stage—but not as a material in the traditional sense, but rather as something from which we can learn.
Leather reminds us to simply be, rather than constantly striving to become something else. It responds to whatever it encounters—to touch, to water, to the passage of time. It changes without losing itself. It bears its marks not as flaws, but with a naturalness that almost seems proud. Every crease, every nuance tells the story of something that has been lived, not merely owned.
Perhaps that is exactly the attitude we need right now.
Our bags are also born from this philosophy. They aren’t meant to remain untouched. They’re meant to accompany you on your journey, to adapt, to soften, to become deeper and more personal. With every time you carry them, every time you set them down, every moment of everyday life, something unique is created that can’t be replicated. No bag stays the same as it was on the first day—and that is precisely where its value lies.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence. About things that are allowed to remain, precisely because they change. And who knows, maybe we’re already working on something new behind the scenes. Something that has grown out of your feedback, your thoughts, your needs, your paths. Nothing rushed, nothing loud, but something that has evolved, just like everything we believe in.
But for now, we'll stay here.
In what is.
In what grows, even when no one expects it.
Bloom anyway.
Let’s not stand still, let’s not retreat completely. Let’s continue to grow in our own way; quietly, perhaps, inconspicuously at times, but with a strength that cannot be stopped. Like flowers that force their way through cracks in the asphalt, toward the light, undeterred by anything that stands in their way.
xx
