Why regional leather is important - and why MARAI is more than just a brand

In a world where resources are becoming increasingly scarce, the question arises: how can we work with what is already there? With leather, the answer is clear and it is right on our doorstep.

We believe that true sustainability does not lie in constantly inventing new materials, but in returning existing resources to the cycle.

Every year, tens of thousands of goatskins and sheepskins are produced in Switzerland as a by-product of the food industry. Without demand, they are usually incinerated. A natural, long-lasting material - simply disposed of. We at MARAI want to change that. Together with great partner companies, we bring these skins back into the cycle. We use vegetable tanning agents to create high-quality leather: robust, durable and beautiful.

That is the essence of MARAI - we don't just create bags, we give a new life to a misunderstood material.

A piece of regional leather that MARAI transforms into unique bags.

Sharing instead of gatekeeping

Many in the industry keep their knowledge to themselves - gatekeeping is almost standard practice. We see things differently. For us, sharing is caring.

That's why MARAI is part of the Regional Leather Initiative. We make our leather, our expertise and our experience available there - for designers, brands and creative people who want to explore sustainable paths. Whether white label products, joint developments or inspiration for new ideas: We believe that valuable things only become great when they are shared.
