Why local leather matters – and why MARAI is more than just a brand
In a world where resources are increasingly scarce, the question is: How can we work with what's already here? When it comes to leather, the answer is clear, and it's right on our doorstep.
We believe that true sustainability isn't about constantly inventing new materials, but about bringing existing resources back into the cycle.
Every year in Switzerland, tens of thousands of goat and sheepskins are discarded as by-products of the food industry. Without demand, they are usually burned. A natural, durable material – simply thrown away. At MARAI, we want to change that. Together with great partner companies, we bring these skins back into the cycle. Using plant-based tanning agents, we create high-quality leather: robust, durable, and beautiful.
That's the heart of MARAI – we don't just make bags, we give a new life to a misunderstood material.
Sharing, not gatekeeping
Lots of people in the industry keep their knowledge to themselves – gatekeeping is pretty much the norm. But we see things differently. For us, it's all about: Sharing is Caring.
That's why MARAI is part of the Regional Leather initiative. We make our leather, expertise, and experience accessible to designers, brands, and creatives who want to take sustainable paths. Whether it's white-label products, joint developments, or inspiration for new ideas, we believe that something valuable can only grow when you share it.
And you are an important part of it!
With a MARAI bag, you're not just carrying a design piece, but making a statement – for circular economy, Swiss craftsmanship, and a fresh appreciation for materials.
